Peninsula Agency on Aging is providing free fans this summer to eligible seniors through VA Dominion Power’s Fan Care program. Room air conditioner units can also be provided to eligible seniors who do not have any air conditioning in the home. Criteria: 60 + years, must meet household income requirements and have health risk of heat stress. May not be eligible if received a fan during the summer of 2007 or 2008. Call 873-0541.

Job Description

Position: Director of Community Education and Outreach Approved on: 11/1/2004
Reports to: Executive Director

Position Summary: The Director of Community Education and Outreach works under the direct supervision of the Executive Director and performs a variety of functions related to education, training and outreach in the community on domestic violence and homelessness and about Samaritan House programs and services. This position serves as part of the management team.

Job Responsibilities: Develop, coordinate, and implement a comprehensive education program which includes training, recruitment, and overall management of staff/volunteers to provide educational presentations to the public, other staff and volunteers.

1. Recruit, train, and supervise Community Education and Outreach staff interns, and volunteers.
2. Design and implement systems for marketing of educational programs.
3. Design and conduct workshops and presentations to the community at large including prevention programs.
4. Research and manage updated information regarding domestic violence and homelessness at the local, state, and federal levels to disseminate to staff/volunteers and to use in enhancing service and educational programs.
5. Coordinate outreach activities with the development and volunteer departments to support programs and to coordinate dissemination of information to the community at large, i.e. distribution of Samaritan House resource information, church and donor cultivation activities.
6. Cultivate and maintain relationships with local community based and statewide organizations by participating in conferences, lectures, tasks forces to enhance collaboration on programs, services, and creation of systems changes for clients.
7. Represent the agency at various events and/or media outreach activities.
8. Assist in the development and coordination of the agency's involvement in Domestic Violence Awareness Month activities and other community education efforts.
9. Manage the departmental budget.
10. Must meet grant education goals and outcomes for compliance.
11. Responsible for all appropriate reporting for grants and/or internal management.
12. Other duties as assigned.

Required Background:

• At least a Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Education, Women's Studies, Sociology, Psychology, Public Policy or related field required. Master’s Degree preferred.
• Prior experience and comprehensive understanding of domestic violence, homelessness, women's issues and community coalition building.
• Minimum of 5 years of training experience.
• Knowledge of shelter programs/direct services a bonus but not required.

Required Skills:

• Ability to develop and implement training programs.
• Excellent communication and excellent public speaking ability.
• Ability to lead and direct groups.
• Good organizational skills.
• Good computer skills, i.e. Microsoft Outlook, Word, Power point, Excel.
• Familiarity with the adult learning theory and how to use assessment tools.
• Ability to maintain and keep records current and complete statistical reports in a timely manner.
• Ability to work well with people from diverse cultural, economic and educational backgrounds
• Ability to effectively educate adults using innovative teaching techniques.
• Ability to be self –directed and to work independently and to work within a team model of management.
• Ability to be flexible.

Required Physical Skills:

• Ability to operate a motor vehicle; a car, truck, and/or van to travel to speaking engagements and meetings.
• Ability to use a computer and telephone.
• Ability to walk, climb and reach.
• Ability to lift 25 pounds.
• Ability to conduct and attend meetings.

Free Movies for the Family
The summer movie series at Buckroe Beach has begun!
Families can watch free movies each Tuesday night throughout the summer.
Entertainment begins at 7 p.m. and the movies start at sunset. Guests
are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and coolers or picnic
baskets.
