Through a series of lectures, field trips, and simulated activities, citizens are provided training similar to that of an actual police officer. The Academy is of benefit to the community and the department because it builds relationships and creates a cadre of citizens who are better informed about the reality of police work. Format: The academy runs for thirteen weeks with most classes held between 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. on Thursday nights. Location: Unless otherwise specified, classes are conducted at the Police Headquarters (9710 Jefferson Avenue, Newport News, VA 23605). Some off-site visits are made to other relevant locations. Create and maintain spreadsheets on grant activities for review by the Program Manager, and works closely with the Department of Finance. • Assists the Program Manager with budget requests, maintains accounting of grant funds, and requests budget transfers when appropriate. Prepares weekly/monthly budget reports and submits to the Program Manager who will disseminate to the leadership council. • Arrange travel accommodations, lodging, and travel expense reporting for the Program Manager. • Works with the Program Manager to develop and implement a grant data tracking system. Assists with programmatic and fiscal monitoring of federal/state grants, including tracking guidelines for deliverables. • Record meeting minutes and distributes to committee members. Coordinate communication, when needed, between committee members and the Program Manager. • Perform administrative/clerical duties to include filing, data entry, word processing, typing letters, reports, and memoranda, and proofreading to ensure accuracy. • Research topics to assist the Program Manager in preparation for meetings and presentations. Prepare informational reports for his/her review based on research outcomes. • Performs other duties as required FEATURES: Performs duties under the general supervision of the Program Manager for the Partnership on Youth Violence Prevention. This position requires initiative and independent judgment. Requires considerable contact with the general public, City departments, and a variety of other local, state, and national educational and educational and cultural agencies. QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate Degree in Social Work, Human Services, Public Administration, Community Development, Political Science, Sociology or closely related field. Some experience working in a youth services educational program with experience coordinating community-wide programming. Extensive computer experience in Windows environment, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Internet Explorer. Thorough knowledge of group facilitation practices and techniques of community organizing and communicating. Ability to communicate effectively orally, such as in briefings and presentations, writing correspondences and reports, read and interpret documents, such as laws, regulations, contracts, financial and accounting reports. Ability to foster and maintain positive relationships to work collaboratively within and outside the organization. Must be able to foster public relations with diverse populations, manage multiple projects simultaneously with various levels of complexities and deadlines.
